The CMP's key objectives are to promote an effective investment management environment, ensure a strong and facilitative regulatory regime, and establish Malaysia as an international Islamic capital market centre.

The Malaysian capital market is governed by the Securities Industry Act 1983, Securities Commission Act 1993, Companies Act 1965, Futures Industry Act 1993 and Labuan Offshore Securities Industry Act 1995.

The securities market is supervised by two main regulatory bodies, the Securities Commission (SC) and Bursa Malaysia Bhd (Bursa Malaysia). The SC plays the role of a gate-keeper, conducting surveillance and enforcement on the industry to ensure that companies adhere to the regulations and protect investor interest.

It is the approval authority for bond or debt issues proposed by public listed companies (PLCs) and all corporate proposals related to initial public offerings from companies seeking to go public.

The SC also supervises the conduct of PLCs to ensure that they meet their obligations in accordance with Listing Requirements with regard to financial reporting, corporate governance and the release of market sensitive information.

Bursa Malaysia provides information and exchange-related services, including trading, settlement and depository services related to the securities market.

It also assists in the development of the capital market and enhancing its global competitiveness to ensure an efficient, secure and active trading market for both local and global investors.

The larger capitalized companies are listed on Bursa Malaysia Securities' Main Board, the medium-sized ones on the Second Board while high-growth and dynamic technology companies are on the Mesdaq Market. Malaysia also has an international offshore financial exchange in Labuan.

The needs of the corporate sector and equity investors in general are served by the investment/merchant banks and stockbrokers via a total of 116 branches throughout the country.
